Could Humanity Ever Be Majority Stage Yellow?

21 posts in this topic

I’ve been thinking about what the world’s continuing development up the spiral might look like in the next 200 years.  Stage Orange seems feasible almost anywhere as much of the developing world is starting to industrialize and I expect stage blue religions to continue to decline.  Certainly pockets of purple, red and blue will continue to exist for a long time, but I expect that blue will eventually reduce to around the influence that purple has today.

Majority Green also seems possible, but more ambitious.  I expect some of the issues with capitalism and technology to become more obvious in the coming decades, which should push people in this direction.  Also, if affluence and security continues to increase, then more  of the world will resemble the life conditions in Europe which facilitate Stage Green.  However, attaining Stage Green requires a substantial increase in compassion, which I see as a major challenge for much of the population even with improving life conditions.

The stage I’m more skeptical of is yellow, because it seems to require an understanding of abstract concepts that would be very difficult for the average person.  Considering a Green/Yellow society that would be the precursor to a full Yellow society, certainly life conditions would have improved dramatically.  The education system would have improved dramatically as well, promoting abstract reasoning, critical thinking, and deep conceptual understanding.  Even so, most people don’t seem intrinsically drawn to intellectual topics.  I could see about 30% of the population being stage yellow, about the same percentage that currently go to college in the US, but after that it seems like stage yellow requires a certain level of intelligence that would limit most people.

For those who have studied spiral dynamics, do you think majority Stage Yellow is possible without some kind of mass scale cognitive enhancement?

When we humans all used to be Stage Purple thousands of years ago, Blue would have seemed completely impossible and insane. But now it's the dying minority that's being transcended. So I don't see a reason why in many hundreds or thousands of years Yellow somehow couldn't become the norm, what Orange is today. But certainly it seems that unless something miraculous happens it will take much longer than 200 years for this to occur on a global scale.

The Spiral of Spiral Dynamics is Infinite.

At some point in the future, the majority of the people will be turquoise but they won't call themselves people anymore.

@JosephKnecht The problem with Turquoise is that they call everything an Illusion when everything is Infinite

Everything = Illusion = Infinite

But back to the original discussion. Once the world produces enough material abundance through technology, the evolution into a majority stage yellow should be relatively easy.

@bmcnicho Part of me is pessimistic and has beliefs about "inherent human nature" which are unfounded. Pessimisticly thinking that humans spiralling into dumbness is as fundemental to the nature of things as entropy always increasing.

But thats a story I used to have. So to answer your question yeah I think everyone can reach stage yellow.

Hark ye yet again — the little lower layer. All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event — in the living act, the undoubted deed — there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough.

To clarify my point, it seems to me that true Yellow contains certain components that would be very difficult for someone of below average intelligence.  They’d need at least a foundational understanding of history and psychology, and be able to see the paradoxical relations within complex systems.

Perhaps there’s a less intellectual version of yellow that’s more intuitively based, but otherwise it’s seems that cognitive enhancement or genetic engineering would be required to create a stage yellow society.

I guess what I’m getting at is who is currently stage yellow who isn’t also a fairly advanced intellectual?

The question will be whether we can move beyond orange before we do irreparable damage to the earth or destroy ourselves.

Same! As much as I want a yellow future one day even thought im not going to be alive to see it, I wonder if orange's industrialization and destruction of the environment will end us all before we have a chance to get there.

@bmcnicho Right. This is what I thought also about biology and intelligence or personality being a limiting factor.

I don't know what I think now.

I think certain types of personalities (where you can maybe include different types of intelligences as part of the definition for someone's personality) are more likely to question societal norms and not be sheep. And then be advanced at a higher level above social norms. But normies in general don't question or see differently.

But if it becomes trendy and socially normal to be yellow, then maybe the normies can be dragged up to yellow.

So you ask who is yellow but not fairly advanced cognitively? Bear in mind people like this could exist but  it would be difficult to spot if they did.

If you're advanced cognitively, you can more easily articulate yourself to others, and then someone can spot that speech and say "aha that's yellow".

The version of yellow I've seen and have is relative to my personality and other people with similar personalities. Higher in openness to experience, more intellectual.

Perhaps getting everyone to yellow is a task in increasing people's open mindedness. Yellow being about being multi perspectival at the end of the day. Which is about openness.

I would think a massive improvement in the living conditions of all mankind, so that most people's survival needs at the lower stages are met, would be a prerequisite for a majority of humanity to reach Yellow (my mind here goes to Star Trek, just because there's not many other examples of a stage Yellow society that I can think of). The stage you're at doesn't arise out of thin air, it's a environmental response to survival needs in the society you happen to be living in, and I would imagine stage Yellow thinking would be hard if not impossible to achieve if you're constantly worried about your personal safety, have food insecurity, or are constantly exhausted from working a grinding dead end job.

Most of the world hasn't even reached Green yet, so systemic Yellow thinking is a tall order. The people who make it to the higher stages of Green and then to Yellow tend to be highly privileged (not excluding myself from this).

Tbh, since Yellow is more of a knowledge based society, society itself will probably be a socialist economy. If you chase knowledge, the profits won’t be too great.

Green will become more and more popular in the first-world in the next decades.

Be prepared for SPIRITUAL EGO. I predict that spiritual ego will become terribly ideological, dogmatic, and oppressive before more people are forced into Yellow.

We will move through Green first, but it will be hairy. Considering that Green -like all other 1st tier stages- believes that it is the most awakened.

When the toxic elements of Green become too painfully obvious, then systemic thinking will become more popular, especially in men first.

Here is a thought...

At stage Yellow, most people become aware of Spiral Dynamics. If the majority of people become aware of Spiral Dynamics, they will become part of a predictable system and will attempt to change it. Therefore, Spiral Dynamics will become obsolete if the majority is Yellow.

@tuckerwphotography Stage blue dying minority?Stage blue is the most common stage of all in today's society! Just because you are at orange/green that is why you think it is a minority because you are not aware of all the other people!!! I live in Romania, and here to my awareness 50 is at blue,15 at orange and 30% at red! and 5 procent at purple, this is population wise not developmental society wise! And we are talking about a second world country!!! The world right now needs in the 3rd world countries way more blue influence, in the 2nd world countries more orange and in the first world ones more green!A world society where 30 is at yellow is so distant in the future we cant even imagine! To me y'all on this forum overestimate human beings on the spiral!!! To me right now we are in the fucking dark ages,in 70% of the countries the vast majority of people have a behaviour that relates more to the one of an animal than to a good responsible human being!!!!!!!

@Dany Balan I was referring to the US population, not globally. I agree with your point which is why I said I think it will take far longer to achieve Yellow on a global scale than 200 years.

The main problem I see so far is that high stage orange - stage green - stage yellow people don't want to reproduce that much.

They like to become feminists or some sort of pickup artists or just lone wolfs in general, while stage blue breed like rabbits and outnumber them

@Hello from Russia I’m in a Spiral Dynamics group on Facebook where most of us has to have some yellow to even survive socially in the group for more than a month. Most of us are intellectuals, have advanced graduate degrees, etc. Apparently, a thought leader of chaos theory (something I know nothing about) is also a member of the group. It would be interesting to run a poll to see if anyone has kids and how many.

That said, I am a fairly attractive female, age 39, and have never been married and have no children. I am dating an orange/Achiever 50-something millionaire who also has never been married and has no children. We’ve focused on our careers our whole working lives, and time got away from us. Also, from our perspective we just don’t jibe with most people because we think independently and value our freedom. So yes, we failed to pass down our genes ? but most people just aren’t like us. We may end up together with kids in the long run (not that long as we’re getting old!), or we may end up like Oprah and Stedman ?.

I live in a blue area where blue people do reproduce, but until very recently it was only at replacement level for most ethnic groups. I’m not sure if this year and next will see fewer or more babies than average due to COVID19. If people were intelligent, there would be fewer, but lockdown left a lot of people bored with nothing to do so ?. I do not see any babies for me in the near future.
