Collective Unconscious

3 posts in this topic

I was watching a Russel Brand podcast with some controversial biological scientist type figure. And they were exploring the idea of the collective unconscious almost being like a giant mind that you can tap into. The claim made was there was an apparent rat study that once one rat learned a trick, all other rats studied thereafter would be able to learn that trick faster.

What are your thoughts?

Running a mile under 4 minutes was deemed impossible to ever be achieved.

Nobody in the history of the world was able to run a mile under 4 minutes.

In 1954, one man proved everyone wrong and ran a mile in 3 min 59 sec.

Since 1954, thousands of people were able to run a mile under 4 minutes.

Our minds create self-imposed barriers. Once we break the barrier, we are free.

For some reason this brought epigenetics to my mind. I vaguely recall reading about a study where scientists spritzed mice with lemon juice and then gave them a painful shock, so they naturally became averse to the smell of lemon juice, associating it with pain. But the eerie thing is, the descendents of the mice, several generations down the line, also had an aversion to lemon juice, though they had never been exposed to it or the shocks. They also had no contact with their ancestors, so it seems the aversion was not learned but genetically encoded.
