Age of Information Disaster

14 posts in this topic

So,in Leo's democracy video, he mentioned that part of the problem with the internet is that now, there is less cultural cohesion and there is not a clear, relatively uniform narrative that pretty much every american follows like in the 80's or whatever.

While the internet is a good thing because it has potential to expose you to different perspectives and it speeds up the transmission of ideas and progression of public discourse, the down side is that most people are using the internet strictly to find sources of media that suit their survival agenda and locking themselves in those echo chambers. This makes it so easy to get radicalized and brainwashed by all kinds of ideologies. On top of that, the precedent that Trump set by dismissing anything the media reports that goes against his survival agenda as "fake news" is incredibly dangerous. Now, I'd say a majority of right wingers pretty much feel comfortable dismissing anything they hear that does not reinforce their world view as "marxist fake news" or whatever.

How the fuck can we dig ourselves out of this mess??

@louhad It really is a good point Leo made, it’s why China’s toxic/healthy blue society is moving so fast, they have one goal and that is increasing their influence, American doesn’t really have a goal, people are much more cynical about the “American dream” than they were in the 50s-80s but don’t forget that people are much more conscious of the real world. I bet 15x George Floyd’s and maybe more happened every day in the 60s and people just see it all. My guess is to start to introduce more healthy spiritual concepts and actualization and have people try to take on the goal of maximizing love in life and government, but it’s a hard sell in Societies which people feel like they can do whatever they want. I think people overlook how homogenous Northern Europe is and why that’s contributed to their success, like I said before they have beat us to green but we will most likely beat them to yellow sense we are way more diverse, could be wrong though.

the Overton window is certainly shifting left even though trump is in power. You can just see it, Obama got a lore of hate from republicans but the average person wasn’t so opinionated. The backlash to trump is very evident And is very obvious, obviously dems or at least progressive parties need to start winning elections and money needs to be taken out of politics, that is kind of the thing that will lead to much more progress,

I don’t agree with Chris hedges that societies don’t evolve maybe they Inevitably don’t but consciousness does and human consciousness does as well. Don’t forget trump ya base is a solid 30-40% of the country but I doubt it’s growing.

hope this helped.

Someone will probably end up creating an advanced AI used to create context, so it can wade through the swamp of useless data online that has accumulated throughout the last 15 years—especially the last 10 years.

lol, it’s kind of funny you bring it up because I’ve wondered the same myself and I posted a thread about a crazy part is this video game that came out in 2001 (Metal Gear Solid 2) that eerily talks about this in some sense:

@hoodrow trillson AI Is brilliant and yes that’s a good idea! Why don’t you make it lol a context AI that sifts through meaningless internet data like a more specialized hive mind instead of a search engine.

in the book “law of one” the sixth density being called ra says this is what naturally happens to individual consciousness as we learn more information it starts to merge into one being for more experience. It’s really beautiful, it’s almost like that’s what humans sub consciously want with AI to merge with them.

Toxic ideologies will have to arise from the diverse pool of ideas and they will have to be disprove in the court of public consensus by living through their disastrous consequences.

Human culture learns by suffering the consequences.

For culture to learn that, for example, libertarianism is a toxic and unworkable ideology, it has to be tried and seen to face-plant by hundreds of millions of people.

We learn by fucking up and feeling the pain.

Right now we are learning that the alt-right worldview is shit. Trump is teaching us that.

Society is a self-correcting mechanism driven by pain and suffering. When the suffering gets high enough, people learn.

I don't remember what the name was, but there was this guy who claimed he came from the future and said that basically nations don't exist anymore and that there are these cities of a certain size where socialism was able to function. He claimed that they learned that if the population was too high, socialism wasn't able to function properly because societal cohesion would basically fall away, there had to be a restriction because too many people would lead to people being unable to form a strong community, which socialism is necessary for as it requires a connection to community, a desire to do something for the community out of your own free will.

He also said that each city had basically an AI that would govern that city. There were more details but I forgot.

It was a long time ago that I heard that and when I did I obviously thought that guy was crazy. I still think he was, but the scenario or vision of the future is something that doesn't seem that unrealistic to me anymore.

No AI is gonna solve our problems.

AI will just create more problems.

Because our problems are not external. All human problems stem from a lack of consciousness of the mind. That's it. There is no other problem but that one.

An AI is not gonna fix a delusional human mind.

What if an AI programmed for the betterment of mankind came up with the perfect chemical that could enlighten you forever and automatically sent out drones to spray it on everyone?

We are working on it Leo. Using AI to increase individual consciousness. Just give us some more time and I think you will have a pretty good solution for that.

From a European's perspective, the 2 party system is quite weird, it's so divisive it's insane, on reddit you can't make arguments these days which when they are in favor of either democrats or Trump, the consensus of the sub reddit will just downvote you. There are only 2 camps and they are at war...

In Netherlands we have about 12 parties, right and left wing in total, and right and left aren't very divided, at least nothing compared to what you have.

Each party will get X amounts, out of the 150 seats, and they have to negotiate together, the parties, and come to a majority, left and right wing parties then sometimes have to rule side by side with each other, offer compromises to each other to come to terms with each other, and so usually there is pretty balanced 'middle way' that comes out of this, and I would say our politicians are quite harmonious with each other (especially as apposed to England).

You can't force consciousness, goodness, or love on people.

Having people locked in personal echo chambers is preferable to having everyone locked into the same one, isn't it?

The internet is problematic, but is that the problem?

This is because our flaw as a species is not our lack of intelligence, but our lack of emotional development. We are governed by our emotions, we are limited by our evolutionary legacy. We have not yet taken control, we have not yet developed autonomy.

We basically have not yet grown up. We are children with too much power. And children with too much power only learn when their ignorance comes back to bite them in the ass.
