What holds civilizations together?

What is stopping people of different religions, races, ideologies, wealth, power, IQ's, EQ's, levels of consciousness, moralities, political parties, etc from just killing each other or succeeding from the greater union of civilization? Is it just laziness? Why don't christians get together to start a theocracy and tell the rest of the United States to go fuck itself? Why don't the poor people just kill the rich people? Why don't the neo-nazi's just start an ethnostate?

It has happened all across history from the beginning of time...examples -  French revolution...American revolution...Civil war...just study history.
