What is Sacred?

What does it mean for something to be sacred? Is there anything worthy of this title? What is the origin of kneeling, bowing and other expressions of reverence? It seems to have something to do with submission, surrender and a fear of some greater power. From an enlightened perspective is there such a thing as the sacred?
