Can loss of memory make you more meditative?

An insight I gained one time is this;

The idea that consciousness flourishes more in the absence of mental movement (thoughts/memory) is an illusion. However, while this illusion is believed, it is helpful to have as little mental activity as possible. Of course the only way to do this with any real progress is meditation and self enquiry. Trying to still the mind is impossible because it is the mind that tries...it's like trying to slow down a car by pressing the accelerator more. But finding what you are (and what you are not) will naturally slow down the mind

@Aldo Meditation can reveal there is not “my memory”. There are memories in experience, there is not a separate ‘rememberer’.
