What is Humor and why do we laugh

If people are feeling some sort of exsticencial crisis they often resort to humor to deal with it.
Humor can deal with awkward situations, dark humor may be some twisted form of enlightenment.
Humor can have many different forms and levels to it.
Humor distracts us from the cruel predicement we unenlightenend folks seem to be in but Enlightened masters laugh like fools, but why!?

I want to know the deeper meaning of humor and why humans can laugh about things. I think this is a topic that needs to be discussed!
