whats the difference between love and compassion?

15 posts in this topic

i feel like Leo's video about love was way too advanced for me and i still dont understand whats love, the implications of it, its importance and how to cultivate it.

does compassion lead to love? i can be compassionate if i try to, i can even often get myself to tears. but love i just dont get. i feel sometimes with people that i could love them but i feel like for it to realize i have to express it, and often i think people will be weirded by that so im afraid of expressing it.

also what role does love play in life practically? is it that ill always feel love or that ill feel love every time i see a person? or is it that ill feel love whenever a choose to? or is it a subconscious thing?

i doubt i ever felt love, for now i think the feeling of compassion is love. never had a partner, my parents very rarely expressed their love to me when i was young or ever and all of my friendships are very shallow.

im sorry my topics are so messy, my brain is fucked lately.

I love my mother.

I have compassion for Hitler.

You can have extreme compassion for people who are ”evil”. So dont underestimate it.

Dont look at me! Look inside!

Love is like a worship in one way.

Like for example, you worship Jesus. That's love.

Or whatever. An ant you can also worship. But it's a huge hit to your ego. "What? Worshipping an ant? Ants should worship Me, afterall I'm much bigger and smarter then them" :DWorshipping someone like god is much easier. To worship an ant takes absolutely having no pride, no arrogance. That's not easy to do.

You can only love if you don't think too much of yourself. If you have proudness in you. You will never be willing to bend down. Proud people never bend. They think the world should bend to them.

Actually worship is very nice. You should do it some times. I do it everyday :D it feels amazing.

....

Compassion idk..don't confuse compassion with feeling sorry for others. Or feeling pitty for others. I see it everyday. "Oh you're such a retard I feel so much compassion for you" this is not compassion :D :D

i love my work. i don't have compassion for it.

Then I have probably never felt that, makes me kind of sad, will I be ever able to feel it? I did like things in my life obviously but not very intensely as to call it "love". Maybe in my childhood towards things like cartoons but never people. now everything is so dry and I dont know why.

I guess in most normal people's cases the only love they feel is with family or intimate partners, maybe some hobbies. I dont love my family, I dont have any hobbies I love and I dont have an intimate partner, so I dont have the "easily accessible" love even.

how do i start loving?

@Salvijus any sort of worship is a step away from unconditional love, although it can still be a link to love for those still in darkness. It acts, however, like a bonfire in a cave, and may easily lead to confusing the shadows cast on the walls for the light itself. Embodying Jesus is a surer way to love, than keeping him outside as an idol, as you reap the fruits of the seeds of love and compassion planted by your very being.

@Viking Theory may be of use.

For me I thought I got the 'What is Love' video intellectually, in hindsight I really didn't. I came back after some Psychedelic trips helped me see what love really is and that everything is love.

On the comedown I re-watched the love video and it made so much more sense. But I saw love for myself in everything (I'm not there anymore) through the LSD and that did more for me than intellectualising every could.

Love is more general.  I love my Life Purpose Vision for example.  Compassion is more about being concerned with well-being of another person.

Another thing that's weird about it is I can say, I love x, where x is anything.  But compassion requires another two words -- I gotta I have compassion for x.  So compassion unlike love seems to require these words "have" and "for".  So and so has compassion for X, where X is usually a sentient being, right.  However I can say I love porno or something totally out there too.  I can say I love death.  Can I say I have compassion for death?  That sounds kinda odd.  Probably not so much, right.  Compassion seems to connote a feeling or orientation you have towards one or more sentient beings.  Love is not so restricted in use as compassion is.

Love is an intense connection at its core in my experience. when you are connecting deeply with someone.

However you can deeply connect in many ways. You can connect via natural birth (offspring and parent), through a deep bond in friendship, and romantic love.

Love is like the feeling of when you feel comfortable, welcomed, accepted, given energy and attention to by a person. Love is giving your awareness to another, its to see beyond yourself for the benefit of another, because you deeply want to connect. When you are in love with someone, you will feel energized by them, you will be intimate and vulnerable as well. Intimate physically and mentally like talking about daily thoughts or interests.

and all of this exists at different levels, for different purposes.

Compassion comes from a place of understanding another person and acknowledging, recognizing their situation which often involves some sort of conflict. It is to empathize with another person, be able to imagine how they are feeling, and then being aware of your behavior in regards to the circumstance.

The i with its personalized content will give vitality or movement to the name, to the word, its own influence with thought(the experiencer’s memory/experiences).

Compassion is not an expression of ‘personal’ experience. Not one's own feeling, not what one feels about something, not a thought colored by, or proceeding from emotion.

One who embraces not to be anything, to be nothing, completely nothing, then there is compassion.

Its not empathy or sympathy.

Compassion isn’t present when there is the continual endless cycle of conscious effort sustaining its own self centered continuity.

Compassion isn’t the word, an image born of the past(not dead).

Compassion is alive, dynamic.

When the self feeding movement of thought-self at its root ends, compassion, love is.

Compassion is wishing others be free from suffering or trouble. Love is wishing others may have happiness. Of course love is more commonly known as erotic love which may be platonic or desirous.

Please do not pay attention to my empty words if you are following Leo's teaching !!
Sometimes my empty words may appear too negative, too rational, too irrational, egoistical or even like trolling because my path is a non-path and is nothing but deviation and incompatible with all teachings known.

Compassion stems from your willingness to recognize yourself within another being.
Love is more general and is the subtle force that guides you through your life.

You can be compassionate towards a person, or towards an animal by seeing the context in which you are basically the same. Being compassionate towards a spoon is difficult (but still possible).
Saying that you love, or don't love another person is a misconception to some degree.
You do not love. Love does you.

by feeling that dryness. btw: with an Enneagram type 5, which I would guess you have, it is just as it is how you perceive yourself / the world.
