48hr (possibly longer) water fast ?

28 posts in this topic

I've decided I want to water fast for 48 hours and possibly longer. This will be my first fast. This isn't so much for health benefits but for spiritual/personal growth. Can you throw any advice at a newbie? (I have also researched but has conflicting advice).

Two days is a good place to start for a beginner. From doing some fasts I don't do anything more intense than a little walk, and use the time I would usually eat for extra meditation (you can go much deeper on a fast. So do heaps.) :) When you start eating again, go for a salad, or fruit.

For lots of detail you can watch this:

Thanks for your input @Solace yes I plan on sticking to my 30 minutes Yoga and daily dog walk and using more time for meditation.

I heard to stay away from high fructose fruit's. It's all a little confusing. Somebody else said to take some organic apple cider vinegar daily (before bed) and some Luke warm water with Himalayan salt (every morning).

Thanks for the video my good friend ?

@pluto I feel you may have some knowledge you could possibly share? ?

I would definitely aim for going longer and make sure you absolutely trust the process and enjoy it. Watch out for detox symptoms though, people usually panic here and ditch out but if you are educated and have a good guide you will sail smoothly. Hunger usually passes after day 3 - 4 in which you will see that its all in the mind. Fasting will teach you a lot about your body and its intelligence.

Spend time in nature, sunshine, grounding, doing things you love of a gentle nature, read books , meditate, sleep and enjoy just being with the process.

Try to limit electronics as they can drain energy but if you feel low, get some sunshine, fresh air and hydration you will feel fine in no time and maybe take a little rest. I would use distilled/purified water as they are most purifying but fresh spring water is also good. Some people even have a spoon of raw honey if they cant deal with the cravings as it goes straight into the bloodstream it doesn't effect the fast as much as anything else would.

One of my most spiritually purifying fasts was done on pure water and raw honey. On day 3 and 4 i had a tsp in the afternoon but as it went on i realized the craving goes away and only when you think or smell food you get the craving but on days 5 6 7 8 and onwards there seems to be no connection to food anymore besides appreciating its beauty and essence. At least for me.

Start off with light stuff like fruit, mango and or maybe with some coconut yogurt but keep it very simple no more than 3 different foods at once and wait a while between next feeding so you can observe how you feel after the foods you eat. Or you can do mono meals and slowly as days go by increase the variety and meal frequencies.

Always start off with fruit, then you can slowly introduce steamed veggies and heavier foods likes nuts/seeds as days go by or stay with whatever you feel best on. Experiment and Enjoy :)

Hope this helps

Fasting is an incredible way of giving the body all it needs to heal & repair itself.

One thing I would mention though. If you intend to fast more than 2 days, definitely chat with naturopath or detox specialist.  During a fast, your body will rid itself of heavy metals (among other stuff) that have been accumulated throughout your whole life (food, fumes, cosmetics etc...). All this will go down to your kidneys to be filtered. The longer you fast the more rubbish comes out.  ...The thing is if you go for too long and your body is not ready, you may damage your kidneys.

So perhaps instead of one long fast, you may want to consider doing several of them up to 48 hrs max. Or you could also do a fruit detox like Dr Morse suggests.

Whatever you decide, congratulations on this decision, your body will love you for allowing it to cleanse itself : )

@pluto Brilliant Pluto! Keep it up bud ?

Great idea... I'm interested in intermittent fasting in the future.

Noticed a headache that won't shift though ?

@Charlotte Detox symptom :) Drink some more water and some people sprinkle some extra sea salt to the water for minerals that say assists with the detox symptom and helps keep headaches at bay or you can get a cold rag dipped in salt water and even better add some peppermint essential oil to head, face and neck or to the rag provides a nice mineral boost and cooling sensation.

@pluto Forgot to ask... I've noticed that breaking the fast is very important. I'm not going to break with fruit because of the high sugar content. Would occasional small portions of vegan broth be okay? I'm also concerned about muscle mass loss

I think it would be okay, try to keep it minimal ingredients and maybe research on water fast forums or google that specific question. I don't think you have to worry much about muscle mass. Fat will be used up first and you can easily build back up as muscle memory kicks in if required.

Natural sugars from fruit have never harmed anyone, especially if you are consuming the whole fruit itself and not a juice without the fiber/pulp. Whatever you feel best for you. I personally believe there is no such thing as too much fruit as its the most optimum food for the human body.

The sugar in fruit does not have the same effect as concentrated sugar or artificial sugar. Nature has been perfecting life for billions of years, trust her intelligence :)

Absolutely Pluto, well said. I'm reaching my peak me, I have absolutely no energy whatsoever and it's affecting home management and daily life. How do you know when it's time to break it? The hunger is feeeaaaarce ?

@Star Net yyyeeeaaaahhhhh.... ? I had a strong urge to fast, for what reason is not known to me but I decided to do this instead and then jump into the next challenge ?

I'm with @pluto on this one. Fruit is probably the best way to break a fast. Especially one of those like mango / papaya that just massage your intestines and digest quickly. If you have a juicer, you could start with a green celery/cucumber juice though.

The fructose in sugar does not metabolise as the typical isolated white sugar does and there is a heck of a nutrition packed into fruit.... there is some hippie stuff going on but the fruit will not kick your insulin the way regular white sugar will, most likely this is related to the fiber that slows it down.

And if you are just breaking a fast, it means that your glycogen stores in liver and skeletal muscles have been severely depleted so these are the first place the glucose will be directed to.

Don't you worry about fruit girl, eat it like you mean it !:D
