Dark Room Retreat question

Hi all!

I am wondering if there are major differences between just using Blindfold for 4 days in some calm place and spending this time in the very dark room.

Thanks.

Yes, there is a huge difference.

Using a blindfold will not work.

You need absolutely zero light. Which is not easy to achieve. You will not achieve that at home without serious preparations.

Meditate in your closet. Then tell your family you have come out of the closet and attained enlightenment. Badum tshh!

@Leo Gura Does our body also  have to be not in the presence of some sort of light for this to work or is it is mainly  our eyes that cant be exposed  even the slightest light? Thanks.

@Rinne No, the room must be pitch black all the time. A closet will not work. It's not dark enough. You need a perfectly light-proof chamber.

What differentiates this from an isolation tank? Or is it the same idea.

In psychology class, we learned that a pitch dark room for extended periods of time can damage your eyes. I am not saying do not do the retreat but just be ready for any health consequence.

You don't stay in an isolation tank for 1 week.

Again, this is a very specific technique that cannot be half-assed.

@Leo Gura why this cannot be achieved at home. What if you completely close the window light? What’s the problem there?

Your whole life lol

You would have to make it a routine. A machanical movement of volition/thought. And all the implications ‘feelings, sentiment, reactions, responses, that accompany that series of movements/movement.

Talk about a nightmare?

@electroBeam The totality of the bodies are receptive to photons. Natural darkness(light) is quite Conducive to Awareness and not-knowing. Light is quite conducive to Knowing and low frequency knowledge. Visible knowledge. Every Cell of the Part is a microcosm. Every Body is a macrocosm. If you blindfold. Only the Eye will be awake. If you blindfold the whole. The Totality will be awake.

@Leo Gura where do you get your sources from that it has to be totally pitch black?

Why you gotta make a simple thing so complicated?

You were given the precise technique.

@VadsterLobster If you haven't seen Leo's blog this is the article about a typical Dark Room retreat: https://hridaya-yoga.com/reflections-on-a-40-day-dark-retreat/

This can't be done at home with the blinds closed or a blindfold haha! Just use some common sense. In most cases it needs to be done at a dark room retreat centre, where they have specifically designed rooms. You don't want to be cooking for yourself during a dark retreat, for obvious reasons.
