Baobab/Chlorella/Spirulina/Maca safety

17 posts in this topic

I'm thinking about trying all of those and wondering about their safety and any guidelines I should know.

Something along the lines of mixing it all in lukewarm water in the morning (+ some lemon) and driking it.

Any feedback  on dosage and observed benefits ? I'm mainly afraid of a vitamin overload if I take too many supplements.

Anything else I should know ?

Hi, do not worry. I once tried to overdose on my supplements. I think I became stronger. :D

Well. I tried chlorella and spirulina for the first time yesterday and today. I took a very generous teaspoon of each each day. No negative effects so far.

I don't think I had ever felt the way that I felt after the first time. I felt all tingly, from the upper part of my back and arms, up my spine and in the back of my brain. It felt kind of good and uplifting, but I felt a bit too giddy to be able to focus on what I was doing. :P

I imagined and hoped that it was a toxins cleanup routine, but I don't really know. Think I'll know for sure if my dermatitis clears up.

@Lynnel good question.

from my experience with chlorella and spirulina, don't consume them near your meals. find a mean time between them.

i was taking them right before lunch and i started to feel anemic, as if they were making it harder for my body to absorb iron.

@Lynnel For what benefits are you taking baobab?

I'm planning on taking it for energy, iron absorption, fiber and the potassium goodness and vitamin C I guess ?

Just because it's available in powder at my organic store and I read great things about it x)

Been taking Chlorella for around 8 months now ( 10 tiny tablets daily 20 on fasting days). From own experience I can tell that this is one of the best and most potent things out there. What I've noticed is (all of these could however be related to my transition to plant based diet)

  • improved energy balance throughout the day, no more mind fog after lunch
  • easier waking up
  • better recovery after gym
  • improved calmness and piece of mind ( could be related to meditation)
  • improved awareness throughout the day ( could be related to meditation again)
  • lower cravings for sugary food
  • haven't had any sickness for a long time
  • overdose is not a problem but turns your poop green :D

For both Chlorella and Spirulina it is super important to buy a highly digestible source otherwise you will poop it all out.

Curious about baobab, never heard about anyone trying to eat it.

@Michael569 Aw... should've maybe done research on digestability first. No idea whether I'm excreting it all, but definitely some is getting through.

They are called superfoods because less = more :P Try 1/4 - 1/2 tsp or smaller dosages multiple times a day. I once messed up and took a tablespoon, i couldn't calm down for hours, energy was through the roof felt like i took some drug but in a clean way.

A 1-ounce (3 tbsp) serving of chlorella contains:

Protein—16g.

Vitamin A—287% RDA.

Vitamin B2—71% RDA.

Vitamin B3—33% RDA.

Iron—202% RDA.

Magnesium—22% RDA.

Zinc—133% RDA.

How ? Also, double how? since you woudn't start feeling anemic right away as if your iron dissapeared somewhere. The male body doesn't usually have any problems with iron, it's the opposite that's quite dangerous.

Isn't that a lot ? Would you have the same benefits if you took a big dose in the morning for instance ?

Are you talking about chlorella or spirulina ?

@pluto @Huginn @Dodo @Michael569 I may do another topic for this but what brands would you suggest ?

Chlorella can be taken in a big dosage once a day while spirulina has to be taken in 2-3 times

i heard from a nutrition specialist that even though they are rich in iron, they block the iron absorption by the red blood cell.

i don't understand why. i just felt anemic (before asking for professional help, so it was not placebo effect)

@Lynnel I didn't do any research on the brands before buying, but decided to trust the store and packaging info:

Chlorella: Organic Raw Powder from Purisana

Spirulina: from Supernature

Also can't really tell how good they've worked on me yet. I started a fast shortly after trying them, and still fasting. If anyone is familiar with their quality, do tell. :)

Did you mean purasana ? Because it's the one they got at my organic store over here.

I'll also try and experiment with them and will report back  + do some more research on the brand etc since it can be very important

@Dodo thanks !

Chlorella/Spirulina, blue-green algae, marine phytoplankton ect.. are probably the highest absorbed foods on the planet. They are basically the source of foods. I have used these ones and still do alternate for over 5 years

Never found the need to use more than 1 Tbsp a day, usually just 1.5g - 3g (1/2 - 1 tsp worth) paired with healthy diet/lifestyle does wonders long term. Since i started with these life feels sharper, more clarity, there's a certain clean feeling to them like you are no longer stuck in quicksand that everyone else seems to be in but now are swimming smoothly in water.

:P
