“I Am Not I”

BY JUAN RAMÓN JIMÉNEZ

TRANSLATED BY ROBERT BLY

I am not I.

                   I am this one

walking beside me whom I do not see,

whom at times I manage to visit,

and whom at other times I forget;

who remains calm and silent while I talk,

and forgives, gently, when I hate,

who walks where I am not,

who will remain standing when I die.

I don’t know anything about Vedanta, or any other theory’s/concepts/ or philosophical knowledge but this seems rather familiar to me in relation to my inquiry and understanding of thought and liberation from the self.

Vedanta (IAST, Vedānta, Sanskrit: वेदान्त) or Uttara Mīmāṃsā is one of the six orthodox (āstika) schools of Hindu philosophy. Vedanta literally means "end of the Vedas", reflecting ideas that emerged from the speculations and philosophies contained in the Upanishads.

Veda (n.) ancient sacred Hindu book, 1734, from Sanskrit veda, literally "knowledge, understanding," especially "sacred knowledge," from root vid- "to know," from PIE root *weid- "to see." The books are the Rig-, Yajur-, Sama-, and Atharva-veda.

from Sanskrit vedānta, from veda (see Veda) + anta ‘end.’

The end of memory knowledge experience

‘The self’ ‘Thought’

I saw you post and explored this word Vedanta. Just seemed interestingly similar?

@Faceless :).. Yes, you will find it similar. I have just put up a guide for spiritual seekers, in my blog. It combines Buddhism and Vedanta: https://nellaishanmugam.wordpress.com/for-seekers-of-liberation/

But the essence of Vedanta really doesn't have anything to do with Vedas. It is a very ancient approach and too traditional but I have simplified it by taking it out from a lot of unnecessary dogma, scripture reading, myths etc.

Zen teachers have an excellent method of dealing with students who start comparing themselves to Buddha or God [after their early enlightenment experiences, says Ken Wilber]. “They take the stick and beat the crap out of you. And after five or ten years of that, you finally get over yourself” (John Horgan, Rational Mysticism: Dispatches from the Border Between Science and Spirituality, 2003).

''I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly that their kingdom is not of this world, and yet they lay their hands on everything they can get'' (NapoleonBonaparte).

"We control matter because we control the mind. Reality is inside the skull. You will learn by degrees, Winston. There is nothing that we could not do. Invisibility, levitation—anything. I could float off this floor like a soap bubble if I wish to. I do not wish to, because the Party does not wish it. You must get rid of those nineteenth-century ideas about the laws of Nature. We make the laws of Nature." (1984)

Man.. this one is absolutely beautiful. Brings tears to my eyes

I finally learned that within me
there lay an invincible summer.
