Moral dilemma: Gambling assignment

1 post in this topic

Hi guys!

I want your take on something. I’m currently a software developer for a consultancy. I’ve asked to be reassigned from my assignment because I do not feel motivated working there among other reasons. Furthermore everyone else that has been at this assignment, has quit after about as long as I have 1-2 years in. It not a great place to work.

This is something we can do at my consultancy so that’s fine so far. Last week my boss called about assignment that would require a long commute 2-3h a day. I currently have 35 minutes a day. It was for a company that makes trucks. So I asked for something else. Which is also allowed.

Today my boss called about an other assignment, this one is for a state own gambling company. All kinds of gambling, scratch offs, poker, tv-shows related gambling, Online casino. It is arguably state owned and partially meant for harm reduction. However I find this whole industry morally suspect.

It seems I would be working on designing the games.

My boss wasn’t impressed by me trying to get out of this to say the least.

I’m considering quitting to get out of this situation. Or staying at my current assignment a few more months.

I would feel embarrassed telling people I work there, could also be a pride thing.

What do you guys think? Am I being too picky and sensitive? Everyone else I’ve consulted seems to think so.
