in a certain sense There is just nothing fun about life after you are 35 lol ?

    Thanks for the reminder. :D

No, the 'you' that is commenting and has opinions isn't going to live forever. It's not even the same one when you're in the dream-state at night. And it was saying completely different things 20 years ago. In a way, it's not even 'alive' now. It's just a mask.

Also, there are many people that claim that they have worked at government facilities and that they are hiding something.

More than just some guy's word, even a high-ranking official. We've been through this with Bob Lazar. Couldn't someone take a selfie with their alien buddy?

  3. Making humour like that is a good strategy. If you suspect someone dislikes you, you could also try the Ben Franklin effect.

The other thing to be aware of is that by having a high degree of consciousness, the negative emotions have a very hard time arising. For example:

    1) Some says/does something

    2) An emotion arises in the body and reaches out to you to make it into a bitter story of 'me', and why this should not be happening. (Someone used the analogy of a train pulling up to the station but you do not have to board it.)

    3) Because you are watching the energy arising, it cannot take over you. You watch it pass by.

Without being watchful of the internal process, of course, one just feels miserable and the emotion can become pathological over time.

If you are unfamiliar with Eckhart Tolle's discussions about the pain-body in the Power of Now, that is essential reading. I can try and find a video online if you wish.

Note: this is not an argument in favour of remaining in a toxic situation long-term.

  4. There has definitely been contact; in fact, the US has been trying to reduce the amount of contact with aliens via the border wall.

Jokes aside, there needs to be evidence in order for this to be taken seriously. We've had whistleblowers expose NSA spying and other scandals, yet nothing regarding this. It would be headline of the century.

This is pretty much the case for most people, question it yourself, what did you once believe that now you think is stupid and have you now got the whole picture?

There is a term for this idea that the current worldview is complete, but I can't remember of it.

Lots of thought-provoking ideas in your commentary. I would not draw any parallel between political open-mindedness to nuance and spiritual enlightenment. An individual breaking free of the tribalism of us-versus-them of internet-age political discourse may make for a much richer intellectual contribution, but has nothing to do with any sort of ego transcendence. Best to focus on one topic or the other.

The term woke seems to have increasingly become a derogatory term for the most aggressive SJW antics. Interestingly, the same issue was raised repeatedly in the manifesto of the infamous 'Unabomber', Ted Kaczynski, way back in 1995:

". Those who are most sensitive about “politically incorrect” terminology are not the average black ghettodweller, Asian immigrant, abused woman or disabled person, but a minority of activists, many of whom do not even belong to any “oppressed” group but come from privileged strata of society."

"...if one believes that affirmative action is good for black people, does it make sense to demand affirmative action in hostile or dogmatic terms? Obviously it would be more productive to take a diplomatic and conciliatory approach... Helping black people is not their real goal. Instead, race problems serve as an excuse for them to express their own hostility and frustrated need for power. In doing so they actually harm black people, because the activists’ hostile attitude toward the white majority tends to intensify race hatred."

When this message is digested, the conclusion must surely be drawn that both leftist identity politics and right-wing short-sightedness are both deeply flawed positions that are only propped up by the psychology of tribalism. Indeed, there's much in common with sports, where no one would claim that their favourite football team is genuinely superior, yet they derive much pleasure from cheering them on regardless.

The flaw with the right-wing position is that it assumes a righteous distinction between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' of society - particularly those who fit nicely into the stereotype of the middle or upper-class Christian family. It minimises the plights of all others as representing varying degrees of degeneracy. But neglecting people of colour is the least of the issues here; taken to the extreme, the entire ecosystem, clean air, healthy oceans, a safe climate, are amongst the 'victims' of their apathetic self-interest, which obviously will at some point make them victims of their own simplistic worldview as ecological destruction eventually impacts them.

Meanwhile, the leftist flaw involves an emphasis on aggressive identity politics - black vs. white, male vs. female, LGBT vs. straight, etc. - which triggers social mayhem whilst completely obscuring the most universal issues of extreme wealth inequality and environmental mass-extinction. Worse, the reverse-psychological effect of leftist hostility has the result of bringing us right-wing movements that are proud of environmental destruction to 'punish' leftists as vengeance for being shamed for their straightness, whiteness or maleness (a major theme of the Trump era). The entire political climate is insane at this point.

Yet what a small minority it is who will admonish both insane points of view and focus directly on universal issues like the growing failure of our economic system and the absurdity of attacking the environment that sustains us!

He says that after age 35-40 your career will decline no matter what. Is this really the case? For example Martin Scorsese is a great example of it not being the individual case.

I imagine there would be heaps of exceptions. In the 'spiritual teacher' world, there are few significant players who are under 40.

Is he pushing the agenda to get married, have kids, and go to church weekly to avoid ending up a wrinkly has-been?

  7. My question is: what is the intention with all of this?

Wanting respect for one's hardship from people on the internet? Seeking empathy from women who have never experienced anything like what you describe? Accumulating intellectual arguments in favour of defeatism? Introspection is needed to get to the bottom of this.

A lesson that should be learned early on is that life is not fair. If it were supposed to be fair, it would be structured very differently. Sometimes, you are a beneficiary of the world's unfairness, especially if you have access to clean drinking water or sanitation. This does not mean that no improvement in a situation is possible, nor that there's no use in trying, but if you want an even playing field, planet Earth is not for you.

  8. Given that religion and nationalism both fit under the 'group ego' category, the point is a valid one.

The fatal flaw is that even the most inspired political/religious dogmas become outdated. For example, what did the 'founding fathers' have to say about climate change? Or what did they mean be 'the right to bear arms' in relation to modern weaponry?

I want to let Jesus off the hook, though, as he never condoned Christianity, nor did he have anything to do with it. Islam was built from the ground up as both a religion and a political system, but Jesus had the political aspects added on by other people.

  9. @soos_mite_ah There is a rare exception. It depends on the intention.

Love bombing is a tactic used by cults to recruit lonely and insecure people. Once they are locked in, they get treated like shit but are very unlikely to escape.

Love bombing can be used as a positive tactic when helping a frightened or neglected child (or animal) to rebuild trust. Obviously the intention is to then steer them towards healing.

Hence it is good or evil depending on the underlying intention. How this applies in a relationship setting I cannot say. But the less ego we have, the less there's a need to have some selfish motive to manipulate anyone.

Thanks, I didn't think some of the points were faulty assumptions, I thought they were simply true. They were subtle beliefs I realise now.

It's great that you understand. This subtle point can take away years of frustration trying in vain to make the ego 'enlightened'. :)

This is what Ramana Maharshi said:

Questioner: What is that one thing, knowing which all doubts are solved?

Maharshi: Know the doubter. If the doubter be held, the doubts will not arise. Here the doubter is transcendent. Again when the doubter ceases to exist, there will be no doubts arising. From where will they arise? All are jnanis, jivanmuktas. Only they are not aware of the fact. Doubts must be uprooted. This means that the doubter must be uprooted. Here the doubter is the mind.

    Questioner: What is the method?

Maharshi: ‘Who am I?’ is the investigation.

What I mean to say is that I logically don't understand how just sitting down and looking at reality as purely as possible can lead to a different state of consciousness.

If I may chime in, here's a few questionable assumptions with your story.

    * Something needs to happen

    * Someone needs to find something

    * Your current level of consciousness is no good

    * Some mental idea about a better level of consciousness must come to fruition in the future

    * Something is lacking at this moment

    * You are a mortal human seeking some spiritual epiphany

Who would you be if you discarded all that stuff? Or is the notion of peace and silence unbearable?

Because true unconditional love means a capacity to love anyone the same way.

Absolutely, and I wish that there were more discussions with this level of profundity around here.

I can't speak from a woman's perspective, but I sometimes wonder if a typical young woman really wants to be hit on 8,000 times per day by all the internet pick-up artists? If the intention is satisfying one's own so-called needs (the Self has no needs), all this is surely the exact opposite of love?

The highest love involves seeing all other beings as the same thing as one's self. What Jesus said about loving other as one's self is commonsense from this perspective. Empathy with others would be a natural consequence.

Imagine how simple life would be if people could control their own bodies and minds without preying on others?

  13. @ConsciousOwl10 Sounds like you are doing good work.

What will speed up the process is understanding that all the thoughts and doubts that come up are ultimately old mind patterns trying to re-assert themselves. Even the most subtle thoughts are a part of the old framework of limited thinking. When we 'buy into' these types of thoughts, confusion will arise.

Stillness is your real nature, regardless of what appears in front of you in the world, or in your mind. It's even possible to function in the world as if you were the same old person, but not take it so seriously anymore.

  14. @bejapuskas Yes, of course.

The media is biased because this is a topic that fires people up on both sides. In a way, they function a bit like an internet troll! It would be good if their ethical standards were higher. I mentioned the Second Congo war in another thread; over 5 million people killed in the biggest world war since WWII, and most people in the West probably haven't even heard of it.

There may be more white criminals, but as a percentage of the population, African Americans are grossly over-represented in incarceration (sometimes for stupid 'crimes' like possessing weed), crime, inferior education, inferior mental health support, etc. A sad irony, as we need educated people to be on board with genuine solutions, not nonsense like 'defund the police'. And not rioting.

Seriously  why he gets so much hate? Is it just because he does not bow down to left wing extremists?

Maybe things have changed since I used to watch some of his videos, but I found there to be some excellent educational content and insights into psychology. But he seemed to become quite arrogant and instead of sharing a perspective on his area of specialty, started pushing a whole philosophy rooted in fundamentalist Christianity. It's necessary to be conscious not to turn him into a cult of personality.

On another topic, leftists arguing in favour of censoring all opinions except their own (while nonetheless stupidly making a lot of noise promoting their opponents via the Streisand effect) are a disgrace to politics. It would be so easy for the majority of society to get behind sensible progressive politics if it weren't for this insanity.
