10,000 Hours: Key Points

It takes 10,000 hours, or about 10 years, to develop enough technical expertise to start making a meaningful contribution in an industry, or to perform at a world-class level. This applies to sports, business, career, hobbies, etc.

What are you mastering over the next 10 years? Focus on one or two things. Make a conscious decision right now and write it down in your Mission Statement. You need be investing your time towards that 10,000 hour mark. This is the greatest investment you can make and deserves your attention.

Important because mastery allows you to get into flow, gives you value in the eyes of others, and allows you to make a meaningful contribution. If you have no technical skills, you will be working a mundane, low-paying job that offers little self-expression, creative contribution, or autonomy.

Deliberate practice: practice hard. Push the envelope so you are actually learning, not just hacking around, otherwise 10,000 hours won't be enough.

Many say that 10,000 hours is actually the bare minimum and the number should be raised. So what are you waiting for? Get started!
